The Rev'd Gregory C. Syler

Greg Syler was called as the rector of St. George's in 2007, and came to Valley Lee from his time as Curate at Church of Our Saviour, Chicago (Diocese of Chicago).  Prior to his ordination in 2005, Greg served for one year as seminarian at Trinity Chuch, St. Mary's City, a time of intentional residency and ministry while he was completing his Diploman in Anglican Studies at the Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, VA.  That love of St. Mary's County, and Greg's obvious fondness for the people and story of this place, led him to seek the call when he -- and St. George's -- were available for consideration two years later.

Prior to his time in St. Mary's City, Greg taught theology in a Roman Catholic high school in Chicago.  He received his Masters of Divinity from the Divinity School at the University of Chicago, and his Bachelor's degree from St. Xavier University, a Catholic liberal arts college.  In the Diocese of Washington, Greg has served on the Bishop's Search Committee (2010-11), Diocesan Council, and is currently the Clergy Convener for Region 6 (southern Maryland) and a member of the Southern Marland Steering Committee.  Greg was elected Clerical Deputy to The Episcopal Church's 2015 General Convention.  He has served the southern Maryland community as member and President of the Board of Directors of the Pastoral Counseling Center in Lexington Park as well as a leader in the county-wide WARM program and the ecumenical outreach-focused Next Steps Fellowship.

A very happy resident of St. Mary's County, Greg lives in the rectory in Valley Lee with his daughter, Carter St. Clair, and their dog, Phoebe, and cat, George.
